In the mood for pizza, but not the carbs? “Meatzzas” are a great alternative—you get the meat, cheese, and sauce with none of the bread. You can even add veggies on it if you want! If the weather is poor, you can bake these and get the same tasty results but grilling them you get the flavor from the char and the fire. You also make these in individual serving sizes! Make extra meat “crusts” and you can store them in the freezer for next time you want this or the next time you want a burger—it works for both!
Yield: 4 servings
1 lb of ground beef
8 oz shredded mozzarella
1 jar of pizza sauce
Any veggie you might want
Salt and pepper to taste
Foil or a fireproof lid
First, form the patties. Divide the beef into 4 sections (4 oz each). Form into thin patties with your hands or a burger press. If using a burger press, you might need to press them out a little flatter even. Season your patties with salt and pepper
After your grill grate has been heating, grill your patties for about 5 minutes and then flip. Carefully spoon sauce over them and top with cheese and veggies. If you do veggies, put them under the cheese so they melt onto the patty. Lightly cover with foil or with a lid and cook for another 5 minutes or until the patty is done. Pull from the grill and you’re done!
If you want the bread crust, just heat up some pre-made crusts over the fire (right on the grill grate will add some more flavor to the bread!). Cut into pieces to fit the meatzza.
